Useful Contacts and Information

Tax and Regulation
Revenue and customs for all personal, employer and corporation tax advice and VAT related information Once your turnover exceeds, or you expect it to exceed, a threshold of £68,000 (as of May 2009), then you must register. If your turnover is below the threshold, you may register voluntarily. In general, if most of your sales are to other businesses, then it is advantageous to register.   As an employer, you have a number of legal obligations with regards to paying employees. You are obliged to collect tax and NI on their behalf and to pay this to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. If you don't follow the proper procedures - including paying your male and female employees equally and fairly - you could have penalties to pay. You must also - where necessary - make other statutory payments, including maternity, paternity and adoption, sick and guarantee pay. There are number of statutory forms that have to be submitted on behalf of your employees to HMRC

Health and safety information
If you employ five or more people you must have a written health and safety policy statement and a record of your health and safety arrangements. You need a written document so that you and your workforce are clear about who's responsible for what. If your business employs less than five people you are not legally required to have a written health and safety policy statement. However, you must still ensure that you work safely - a written policy can help you do this.
